I’ve read an article about Willie Revillame and he stated that Pharmacists are "glorified salesladies/salesmen". It happened in Wowowee last week when the contestants are valedictorian students. I haven’t got a chance to watch and witness what happened since I don’t really watch ABS CBN shows. I will just repost the article I found from miellesvf’s blog in friendster. Here it goes:
"Are we glorified salesmen/saleslady?
Last week, ang mga contestant sa wowowee eh mga valedictorian students. willie revillame asked these honor students what they are planning to take when they go to college. The first girl said, "Nursing pappy". Willie Revilamme was all AWS and WOWs to her. So is the audience. Parang everyone is thinking na it was the best choice. And I have no problem about that, eh un ang gusto nila. at marami rin akong kaibigang nurses.Then, ung next contestant, tinanong din ni Willie. Sabi nung contestant, "Pharmacy po". And guess what WIllie said in reply to that. Ang sabi nya, "BAKIT IHA, GUSTO MO MAGBENTA NG GAMOT SA MERCURY DRUG?" Everybody was laughing. Willie then followed up his statement and said "OR GUSTO MO PUMUNTA SA MGA DUKTOR, PARANG DOOR TO DOOR, PARA MAGBENTA NG GAMOT?" . Clearly, he is making fun of our profession.
Of course, one should not expect so much from willie. I just felt that for as long as people like him are not enlightened, we will remained as GLORIFIED SALESMEN/SALESLADY as they thought we are.
Many people don’t realize that even their mouthwash are prepared, analyzed and designed by pharmacist. That when they are hospitalized, the mere responsibility of the nurses is to administer drugs – that there are other people that they do not see, who also helps to provide them the cure they are longing. That we earned just above the minimum but we are over educated people whose knowledge is under utilized by the conception of patients that we are just but salesmen. That we are professionals and yet nobody knows that.
In college, halos lahat ng premed courses eh natouch ng curriculum natin. Zoology and botany – BS BIO, Microbio – BS MEDTECH, Health Care (AHSE) – BS NURSING. So parang natikman na rin natin lahat ng premed courses plus yung mga subject na exclusive sa atin. At hindi biro ang course natin. Sobrang hindi, pharmacology pa lang balde baldeng dugo na lumabas sa ilong ko.
The heck. Although at least our tv exposure is not limited to selling drugs. hehehe, in a soap opera of ABS CBN, LOBO, one character is a pharmacist and no, he doesnt work in a drugstore. Im thinking he is actually designing something of a drug para mawala pagka lobo ni angel.
To answer your question, no I don’t mind being called PHARMACIST LANG tayo. I am hurt but I dont mind. Mind over Matter, if you dont mind then it should not matter. haha. they have all the right to think of us that way. Kung salesman lang tingin nila, no problem. Its not their fault they lack the knowledge. WHAT TO DO? Let’s do our share of work and prove them wrong. Do ourself justice. Kasi kung ano man ang preception nila, at some extent, tayo din ang may gawa nun .
I am a pharmacist, I am not rich. But hey, being a pharmacist is not a job, a lucrative job at that. Its a profession. A calling. I may not be earning the 18 thou a month these call center agents are getting but I am happy. Believe me, kahit sa internship, there is a feeling of self gratification when you dispense(or aid to dispense) a drug knowing that it was carefully checked and known to be correct and that in a few minutes from now, it will lessen the illness of someone out there.
I just hoped na with what Willie has done to the poor girl in his show, it will not affect the decision of the girl to take Pharmacy in college. It’s a great course giving you so much power, making you an unsung hero but yes, will not make you rich.

Willie Revillame doesn’t really have an idea what is the course BS Pharmacy is all about. He doesn’t know what’s coming out of his mouth. He owes us (pharmacists) an apology.

My colleagues and I are responsible for preparing chemo preps for cancer patients. We prepare over 500 preps a day for treatments of over 200 pts. that are treated on a daily basis. When it comes to Oncology, we are the experts, we answer all clinical questions from doctors , nurses and patients.Someone like Revillame is ignorant of what is going on , is he a college graduate? I noticed that he’s having a hard time expressing himself in English. By the way, an oncology pharmacist with clinical background in US makes about $125,000/ year average. FYI I’m a graduate of U.S.T.

But there are more poor people per capita in the Phil. than there are rich people and these poor people are making him richer by patronizing him more. I bet you the Filipino elites don’t even watch him. Pharmacists.. demand an apology. In Canada, Pharmacists’ starting pay is $85.00/hr.
